New Chief Executive named

Environmental Protection Authority Chief Executive Rob Forlong has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of Whangarei District Council; an appointment that that will return him to a community from his childhood.

Former Environmental Risk Management Authority Chief Executive and more recently Environmental Protection Authority Chief Executive, Mr Forlong brings a strong executive background to the position. He has had 10 years experience as a CEO and has held many key leadership roles, including managerial positions at the Greater Wellington Regional Council.

His local government experience goes back several decades, in fact, in his early ‘20s his first job in Local Government was on Dunedin City Council rubbish trucks.

Mr Forlong said it is exciting to be returning to the local government sector.

“I am looking forward to developing strong, positive relationships in the Whangarei Community where I once lived as a child, and towards making a real difference within the Council.”

Whangarei Mayor Sheryl Mai said Mr Forlong was selected from a very strong field of candidates.

"He is a professional of immense capability and we are thrilled to have attracted somebody of such a high calibre and great experience. We all welcome Rob and look forward to working with him as our new Chief Executive.”

Mayor Mai said the remuneration package for the Chief Executive’s role is $325,000 per annum which is commensurate with Mr Forlong’s experience and comparable to other Chief Executive roles at councils of a similar size.

“Rob will join us in July, and we will let you know his exact start date closer to the time.”
