Upper Waitaki Zone Committee focuses on water quality planning
The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee will meet for its monthly meeting in Twizel on Friday, 17 April to discuss local water management issues.
At the meeting the committee will confirm the recommended method for allocating catchment loads in the zone and finalise its ZIP Addendum. The allocation method was developed by a working group and aims to protect the integrity of catchment loads and water quality outcomes.
The updated nitrogen allocated framework will then be incorporated in to the committee’s Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) Addendum which will be presented to a joint council working group in early May.
The Addendum has been developed with the community to provide the water quality limits and non-statutory actions required to implement the goals and aspirations of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) in the zone. It provides specific recommendations to achieve outcomes relating to aquatic biodiversity, recreation, customary use, and sustainable community growth.
The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waitaki and Mackenzie District councils. Zone committee meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee and Lower Waitaki South Coastal Canterbury zone committees are currently refreshing their memberships to ensure new community perspectives are reflected to help balance the differing water use interests in the zones.
