Auckland Open Streets a success
Auckland Open Streets a success
Aucklanders came out in their droves on Sunday for Open Streets - one of the last big events of the long summer.
Part of Quay Street was closed for the day so people could walk, cycle, play and socialise.
Auckland Transport estimates around 30,000 people turned up to enjoy the car-free space which featured street entertainers, sports activities, street games, cycling safety workshops, BMX demonstrations, guided bike tours, a heritage trail and live music and dancing.
Auckland Transport’s Walking and Cycling Manager Kathryn King says “We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who put in so much time and effort to make Open Streets Auckland such an incredible day. We were overwhelmed by the support we received for the event and are delighted that so many people came out and enjoyed the day."
Open Streets (‘ciclovia’) is an international initiative to temporarily close the road to vehicle traffic and to claim the street for walking, cycling, playing and socialising.
Open Streets was supported by Waitemata Local Board, Auckland Council and Waterfront Auckland.
