ANZAC day, busy day for Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter

ANZAC day, busy day for Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to a head on collision on Waitomo Caves Road at approximately 10 am this morning. The two sole occupant female drivers were both injured in the crash.

A 65 year old American was trapped in her car for over an hour with multiple fractures before she was freed by rescue crews. She was then flown by the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Waikato Hospital in serious condition. The other driver, a 49 year old local woman, sustained moderate injuries and was also taken to Waikato Hospital for further treatment.

NZ Fire Service and St John were present at the scene, for more information please contact NZ Police.

The helicopter was again called out at approximately 6 pm to Waihi. A 18 year hold Hamilton man had sustained burns while adding petrol to a fire. St John staff had administered treatment initially at Athenree, the scene of the incident, before transporting him to the sports field in Waihi for pick up by the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The man was then flown to Waikato Hospital with serious burns to his arms and legs.
Philips Search and Rescue Trust is a charitable organisation, operating rescue helicopters throughout the Central North Island. Philips Search and Rescue Trust relies on support from principal sponsors and community donations. Special thanks to Waikato King Country's principal sponsor, Westpac. This crucial financial support ensures our rescue helicopters can continue to bring life-saving equipment, rescue personnel and trauma-trained medics directly to the patient.
