Kaikoura Zone Committee focuses on water management

Kaikoura Zone Committee focuses on long-term water management priorities

The Kaikoura Zone Committee will meet for its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, 29 April to discuss local water management issues.

The meeting will begin with an opportunity for community members to speak before it goes on to receive updates from its Nutrient Management and Water Efficiency and Love the Lyell / Waikōau working groups.

The committee will then receive a short update on Te Korowai and discuss how the committee can continue to have a close working relationship with the group.

Next, the committee will be briefed by Environment Canterbury on how it plans to resource and support the ongoing delivery of the community’s water management expectations as outlined in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP).

Environment Canterbury is moving towards zone-focused staff teams. The first of these teams has been set up in Amberley to cover the Hurunui-Waiau and Kaikoura zones and other zone based teams will follow around the region.

The focus of the team will be on preparing and implementing a locally based work programme to deliver the on-the-ground work outlined in the committee’s ZIP to deliver regional priorities.

The committee will then focus on how it can continue to engage with the community on local water management issues that affect them. This will include how it can work with young people on issues that will affect them in the future.

The committee will finish the meeting with a discussion on its priorities and outcomes over the next five years. The committee’s priorities include drinking water, biodiversity, nutrient management, lowland streams, and visitor impacts.

The Kaikoura Zone Water Committee was launched in mid-2011 to address local water issues and deliver the goals of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).
