Shaping our Future looks at transport in Queenstown

Shaping our Future looks at transport in the Queenstown Lakes District

The future direction of transport in the Queenstown Lakes District is to be discussed next week at the latest Shaping Our Future forum.

The forum will bring the community together to develop a set of high-level outcomes and a 30-year vision for all aspects of transport – on land, air and water – in to, out of and around the district. The vision aims to describe an ideal future for transport within the district.

The Queenstown forum will take place at the Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa on Monday May 11 at 6.30pm followed by Wanaka onTuesday May 12 at the Lake Wanaka Centre ate 6.30pm.

Shaping our Future chairman David Kennedy says: “Resident and visitor numbers are projected to soar over the next 30 years so it is timely that we look at a long-term vision for transport needs in the future.

“Transport to, from and within the district has been debated for many years with various ideas proposed, discarded or carried out. Now is good time to get all aspects of the community together to form a collective vision for the future needs of the district,” Kennedy says.

“We encourage ‘blue sky’ thinking and collective agreement on the priorities that will shape what our district looks like for visitors, residents and commercial interest in the future.”

The forum will identify a set of key priority issues that need to be addressed in the short- to medium-term but will also look further to the future of the Lakes District in 30, 40 or 50 years time. By addressing these issues now the community can collectively work towards a common goal for future generations.

The forum will be facilitated in world café style with groups working together around tables. It will be inclusive of all ages and interests and will seek consensus as far as possible through prioritisation.
