Howick residents get serious about invasive weeds
The
Howick Local Board is raising awareness and providing a safe
way for locals to dispose of fast-spreading Rhamnus and Moth
Plant weeds that are killing native plants.
Local board spokesperson John Spiller says the board has identified the weeds as a concern in the area and is encouraging residents to take action with infestations on their properties.
“Most people would have seen Moth Plant and Rhamnus around their neighbourhoods but never realised how much damage they cause, smothering native flora and garden plants,” Mr Spiller says.
“Auckland Council can assess and take appropriate actions with infestations on Council land but can’t remove the weeds from private property.
“To encourage residential efforts, the Howick Local Board has dedicated funding for a strategic approach, including over $13,000 to raise awareness about how residents can identify and remove the weeds from their backyards.
“From 23 May to 28 May we’re making public bins available on Pigeon Mountain for residents to safely dispose of the weeds. People can also bring the weeds to Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturday 23 May between 9am and 12pm, and take home a new plant for their garden.”
Auckland
Council encourages the removal of Rhamnus and Moth Plant
weeds by:
Digging out the plant close to the ground
including the root system
Cutting and treat the vine or
stump with herbicide
Hand-pull the tree or vine from the
ground when the ground is wet or damp
