Workshops an Important Part of Reducing Alcohol Related Harm

Workshops an Important Part of Reducing Alcohol Related Harm

Anyone working with alcohol wanting to refresh or upskill their understanding of the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act is being invited to one of two special workshops.

The free training workshops which are being presented by the Health Promotion Agency (HPA) in Ohakune and Taumarunui on Thursday 4 June will be of value to anyone involved with the selling or supply of alcohol.

Ruapehu District Council (RDC) Chief Licensing Inspector, Tracy Gibson, said that Council and our agency partners are committed to ensuring that everyone involved in the sale or management of alcohol clearly understands what their legal requirements and obligations are.

“Since the introduction of the new Act and Ruapehu’s Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) most commercial hospitality providers seem to have adapted well to the new regime,” she said.

“The new Act and LAP regime have however introduced significant changes to the rules and way that the sale and supply of alcohol is managed.”

“Amendments to the liquor laws were aimed at minimising the harm caused by excessive drinking and improving New Zealand’s drinking culture.”

“Education on the new rules and peoples responsibilities is an important part of this process.”

Mrs Gibson said that the Ohakune workshop starts at 10.00am in the Council Chamber while the evening workshop will be in the Taumarunui Council Chamber starting at 5.30pm.

“The workshop topics which include; the Act, staff training, minors, host responsibility and managers register is the same for both meetings so people are free to attend either venue as suits them.”

“As well as these specific issues the Workshops will provide an opportunity to have any other questions answered and allow operators to network and keep in touch with their local alcohol control agencies such as the Police, Fire, Health, and District Licensing.”

“Anyone who has a question for any of the alcohol control agencies can assist by emailing it in before-hand to; info@ruapehudc.govt.nz which will help in the development of the workshop,” she said.
