Hundertwasser Referendum decision a shot in the arm for Northland’s economy
Reacting to
today’s Hundertwasser / Wairau Maori Art Centre referendum
result, David Wilson of economic development agency
Northland Inc said Whangarei residents had overwhelmingly
voted to give both the city and Northland region a major
economic boost and were to be congratulated.
David Wilson said Northland Inc had supported the ‘Hundertwasser Option’, because of the significant place marketing and economic impact benefits the centre would bring to Whangarei. “This decision and the development when complete will truly put Whangarei on the international visitor map, and will be the catalyst for associated tourism and infrastructure development for the City. It is great news for Whangarei and for all of Northland, we are very, very happy that the people of Whangarei have spoken out for this option”, he said. “This means more visitors coming here, staying longer and spending more. It means more jobs, and it will change the face of Whangarei’s Town Basin area to be even more of a magnet for visitors”, he said.
I also congratulate the Prosper Northland Trust for their vision and for the many, many hours of work put in over the years to get to this point. There is still much work to be done to raise the required funds, and as the region’s economic development agency, Northland Inc will play a role in assisting with the funding application processes he said.
“This is a great day for Whangarei and Northland tourism, and for our region’s economic future”, said David Wilson.
