Dunedin Rises to the Occasion
Dunedin (Friday, 5 June 2015) – Community spirit was to the fore today as the clean up in South Dunedin continued.
Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull thanked all the people who have provided support and assistance to those affected by serious and widespread flooding this week.
“What unfolded has affected so many in the community and it has been wonderful to see people’s response and the help and support residents have offered each other.”
Mr Cull praised the work of all the people who have been involved, including volunteers, emergency services, welfare and other agencies, as well as Dunedin City Council contractors and staff.
DCC Recovery Manager Ruth Stokes says the Council Recovery Centre, based at the St James Presbyterian Church Hall in King Edward Street, will be open from 10am to 4pm tomorrow to co-ordinate the volunteer effort. General advice and support will also be available. If people wish to offer help, they can do so by coming to the centre.
Six teams of volunteers, working closely with Red Cross, DCC staff and Task Force Green, were out on the streets of South Dunedin today responding to 54 requests for assistance. They then went proactively door knocking in 18 South Dunedin streets, providing help where requested.
DCC Building Control staff had carried out more than 150 housing inspections across the wider city by the end of today.
DCC Environmental health staff visited most food premises in Mosgiel, South Dunedin, Caversham, Green Island and Kaikorai. Everything was in hand and most were open for business.
Mrs Stokes says the Dunedin Emergency Operations Centre wound up this afternoon, with co-ordination functions transferring back to ‘business as usual’ for DCC and other services. She thanked all the agencies involved with the centre for their hard work and dedication.
