Seminar for people considering retirement villages

Seminar for people considering retirement villages

Anyone considering moving into a retirement village should take advantage of information seminars provided by the Commissioner for Financial Capability, says Stephanie McMillan, Chairperson of Whangarei District Council’s Positive Aging Advisory Group.

The Commission will be holding a seminar at the Whangarei RSA at 11am on Thursday. The number to call to take part is 0800 268 269, and places are limited.

“For many the decision to move to a retirement village is a very big one to make, particularly when it follows a life changing event,” Mrs McMillan said.

“We hear of many people who have made this lifestyle change without being fully aware of some of the contractual and financial implications, even though they may have received advice, so we think it is important that this information is made more publicly available.”

The Commission for Financial Capability is running the events to help those approaching retirement, and their families, make up their minds about their futures.

“Retirement villages are one housing option for older New Zealanders. We want to help people know more about lifestyle choices and the different retirement village options available,” said David Boyle, the Commission’s Group Manager for Investor Education.

There will be speakers from the Commission, the Retirement Villages Association and legal experts who specialise in retirement village issues.

The seminars will be interactive and only 90 minutes long, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Topics covered will include the types of retirement village structures, costs and operations. The seminars will also explain some important residents’ rights and where people can find out more information.

“The number of people living in retirement villages will double over the next 30 years. Our seminars focus on practical things people need to consider before choosing to live in a retirement village and before they sign up to live in one,” said David.

Places are limited so anyone interested needs to register to attend. Venues and dates, as well as registration details, can be found atwww.cffc.org.nz. Type SEMINAR or call 0800 268 269.
