East West Connections option ticks all the boxes – AA

East West Connections option ticks all the boxes – AA

The AA says that the preferred option identified by NZTA and Auckland Transport for the East West Connections project – which will improve connectivity into, out of and through the Onehunga-Penrose industrial hub – is the best result for the network.

The preferred option involves a full connection on the north side of the Mangere Inlet, linking SH1 and SH20 with a limited access state highway, plus improved public transport connections between Mangere, Otahuhu and Sylvia Park.

AA spokesman Barney Irvine said the preferred option included all the elements the AA and other stakeholder groups had been hoping to see.

“This option ticks all the boxes,” said Mr Irvine. “It creates a seamless connection between the two state highways, responds to the needs of freight, general traffic and public transport, and offers community and environmental benefits.”

Mr Irvine added that it was pleasing to see NZTA and Auckland Transport opting for a comprehensive solution.

“They’re looking to do it once and do it right, and that’s when you get the most gains in terms of congestion relief, productivity, and resilience,” said Mr Irvine. “This approach recognises not just the economic importance of Onehunga and Penrose, but also the need to improve connections for motorists between Auckland’s east and south, including the Airport.”

NZTA and Auckland Transport are now seeking public feedback on the preferred option, and are planning a series of open days this month to provide more information.
