Wintery blast closes several inland South Island highways
The Transport Agency says inland South Island highways appear to have copped the worst of the today’s winter storm, that’s expected to continue into tomorrow.
The following
highways will remain closed overnight:
SH 73 Springfield
To Arthurs Pass (porters Pass)
SH 6 Haast To
Makarora
SH 8 Lindis Pass, Tarras To Omarama.
SH 6 Fox
Glacier To Haast
SH 94 Te Anau To Milford.
SH 8
Omarama To Fairlie
SH 80 Mount Cook Highway
SH 79
Geraldine To Fairlie
The Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright says drivers need to seriously consider if they really need to travel tonight. If they do, then check the weather forecast and highway and local road conditions, pick the safest route - even if it is the longest - and driving to the conditions.
If they have to travel they should allow more time for their journey, be prepared for unexpected hazards and if they travelling alone, tell someone the route they are taking and when they expect to arrive.
Ms Wright says if they have tyre chains, they should know how to use and fit them. They should also respect road closures and restrictions. These are in place to protect them and other road users.”
Even the smallest mistakes and when travelling in snow, ice and frost can see people lose control of their vehicle in a split second she said.
