Samples identified as fuel oil
Samples identified as fuel oil
Oil washed up on Foxton
and Himatangi Beaches this week is thought to have come from
a passing ship, based on the results of initial
testing.
Horizons Regional Council on-scene commander Ian Lowe says testing of samples sent for testing earlier in the week indicate it is likely to be fuel oil. However, identifying the specific vessel responsible for the oil is extremely difficult.
“It’s probable that this fuel oil has come from a passing vessel. While Maritime New Zealand can identify shipping that has passed through the area, it is not possible to say with certainty when the spill occurred or how long the oil was in the water before it washed up on the beach,” Mr Lowe says.
“Without this knowledge, it is very difficult for Maritime New Zealand to track the source and unless there is more definite information they’ve advised that they will be unable to proceed much further with the investigation.
“Despite this, we are really happy with the way the clean-up has been carried out and thank all those involved in clean-up efforts.
“We will continue to monitor the beaches over the weekend and reassess the situation on Monday to determine whether further clean-up efforts are required.”
Both Foxton and Himatangi Beaches reopened yesterday afternoon and signs have been erected at entry points to let visitors know of the recent oil contamination.
If anyone does find patches of oil following the rough weather predicted for the weekend, they are advised to contact Horizons’ pollution hotline on toll free 0508 476 558.
