Severe storm update

Severe storm update

A severe storm affecting both the North and South Islands has resulted in the declaration of states of local emergency on 20 June in Wanganui, Rangitikei and Taranaki for the purpose of evacuations.

Director of Civil Defence Emergency Management, Sarah Stuart-Black, said Civil Defence Emergency Management Groups in affected areas have activated their Civil Defence Emergency arrangements to respond to the event.

“Assessments are underway in most regions, which is only possible this morning following daylight. We expect to get more detailed reports later this morning.”

As of last night, the following areas were most affected:

Manawatu/Wanganui:

State Highways 1, 2, 3, 4, 43, 54, 56, and 57 were closed, or restricted last night, but some have since re-opened. There are widespread local road closures. There are power outages in Wanganui.

About 400 people were evacuated overnight in Wanganui. Civil Defence Centres have been established to provide welfare support by the local CDEM; Red Cross is also in assistance. Several areas of Wanganui are expected to be closed today.

Water contamination is expected due to power loss to sewage pumps. People across the region are advised to save water and limit flushing of toilets to avoid contamination.

About 150 people have been evacuated from Koitiata, a small coastal village at the mouth of the Turakina River. Police and New Zealand Defence Force are assisting, and Civil Defence Emergency Management is providing welfare support.

Taranaki:

People were also evacuated in the Waitotara Valley, a small community in South Taranaki.

New Plymouth CBD is expected to be open for business again today. There are still several local road closures.

About 800 households were without power last night. Water contamination is expected due to power loss to sewage pumps. People across the region are advised to save water and limit flushing of toilets to avoid contamination.

West Coast:

In Hokitika 40 people were evacuated on 19 June; in addition 48 people were evacuated from a rest home. Red Cross is assessing welfare needs from home to home. Work and Income are supporting people who require assistance. Water has been contaminated in Hokitika and people are advised to take care.

Canterbury:

About 450 households were still without power yesterday. Schools in the South Island are expected to re-open on Monday.
