Strong interest in building New Central Library

Contractors are showing strong interest in building Christchurch’s New Central Library.

Seven building companies registered an interest in tendering for the $85 million project, and three preferred tenderers have been selected – Leighs Construction, Southbase and Fletcher Construction.

Christchurch City Council Unit Manager Anchor Projects, Liam Nolan, says he is delighted with the response.

“It indicates the high level of interest in this key Anchor Project which has the potential to revitalise Cathedral Square when it opens in 2018. The Camelot Hotel on the New Central Library site has been demolished and we are busy finalising more detailed aspects of the design.

“With work on the Town Hall starting in a couple of weeks, I think these two major rebuilds will help instil a real sense of confidence in the Central City.”

Companies shortlisted for the library project will receive tender documents in early August once preliminary design work is completed. The preferred tenderer should be known in November with the Council deciding the winning tender before Christmas so work on foundations can begin early next year.

The New Central Library will be the largest public library in the South Island. It will replace the old library building which was damaged in the earthquakes and demolished to make way for the new convention centre.
