More lane movements on SH16

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to expect lane changes from Tuesday 29 June when driving westbound on Auckland’s State Highway 16 (Northwestern motorway).

The same number of lanes will be available but the two left-hand lanes westbound between Rosebank Road and Te Atatu Road will be separated from the third lane, creating more construction work space.

“This is one of several staged lane changes to provide the Causeway Alliance with safe access to raise and widen the motorway while keeping it open to traffic,” says the Transport Agency’s Auckland and Northland Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon.

“Motorists will need to read early warning signs advising of the changes, choose their lane and stay in it. When approaching the lane separation it is important motorists don’t panic and avoid sudden braking and lane changes which can impact on traffic flow.”

Although the lane layout will look different drivers can continue to use the three lanes as they normally would;

• Lane 1 becomes an exit only lane to Te Atatu, as per usual

• Lane 2 can exit at Te Atatu or continue west, as per usual

• Lane 3 continues west and cannot exit at Te Atatu.

In order to prepare for the lane changes, from 10pm Monday 28 June to 5am Tuesday 29 June the westbound motorway between Rosebank Road and Te Atatu Road and the Patiki Road onramp will be closed. All citybound lanes and the Northwestern cycleway will remain open.

This work is part of the Causeway Upgrade Project, one of six projects either completed or under construction to link the Northwestern (SH16) and Southwestern (SH20) motorways providing a motorway alternative to SH1 known as the Western Ring Route. The project is raising and widening 4.8km of SH16 and the cycleway, from Great North Road to the Whau River bridge just before Te Atatu.
