Emergency phase over; focus turns to recovery
Emergency phase over; focus turns to recovery
Taranaki's State of Emergency will not be renewed when it lapses at 9 o'clock tonight (Saturday 27 June).
The region-wide emergency was declared at 9 pm Saturday 20 June after heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and slips, disrupting road and electricity networks.
Some rural households remain isolated and Taranaki Civil Defence continues to provide urgent supplies and support.
The Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Controller David Lean says many people, agencies and organisations stepped up to help with the Civil Defence emergency response over the past week. "I'd like to thank each and every one of you. It was a great effort and yet another example of the way we roll up our sleeves and get things done in Taranaki.”
Mr Lean says the focus now is on sustainable long-term support and assistance for those whose lives and businesses were disrupted by flooding and slips.
“It is likely to take some time for the situation to fully return to normal. Taranaki Civil Defence, the region’s councils and many other agencies will continue to support the clean-up and recovery of those affected by the floods,” says Mr Lean.
Recovery activities will be co-ordinated by the Group's newly appointed Recovery Manager, Craig Campbell-Smart.
