Supplement Use leads to sports ban


The Sports Tribunal of New Zealand has given Touch Player Quentin Gardiner a 15 month ban from sport following a positive test recorded at the Touch nationals in March.

Mr Gardiner’s use of two “pre-workout” supplements around the time of competition was the likely cause of his positive test for the stimulant Methylhexanamine. While this substance is now illegal in New Zealand it was previously used in a variety of supplements and may still be present in old stock.

“It is disappointing that athlete’s still do not get the message that ill considered use of supplements can lead to positive tests and put a halt to their careers” said Drug Free Sport NZ chief executive, Graeme Steel. “Pre workout or energy boost supplements will only work through the use of stimulants most of which are banned and they are potentially very dangerous” said Steel.
