Upper Waitaki Zone Committee focuses on water quality planning
The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee will meet for its monthly meeting in Twizel on Friday, 17 July to discuss local water management issues.
The meeting will begin with contributions from members of the public before the committee welcomes its new members. Four community members have been appointed to the Upper Waitaki Zone Committee as part of a process to ensure a wide range of views are reflected.
Three of the appointments are existing members (Barry Shepherd, Simon Cameron, Mat Bayliss, and Richard Subtil is a new appointment.
The committee will then receive an update from Dairy NZ on sustainable dairying initiatives and research in the zone.
Next, the committee will consider a native planting project for Immediate Steps biodiversity funding that aims to protect and enhance a local park area.
Immediate Steps aims for the protection of ecosystems and habitats to conserve indigenous freshwater diversity. Zone committees decide the priorities for each zone and distribute the funding. There is still significant funding available for local biodiversity projects – application forms can be found by searching ‘Immediate Steps’ at www.ecan.govt.nz.
The committee will finish the meeting with a discussion on the forward work programme to deliver the outcomes outlined in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) through on-the-ground actions.
The committee’s ZIP and recently completed ZIP Addendum have recommendations for both non-statutory and statutory actions to deliver the goals and targets of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy in the zone. The committee will also be updated on the sub-regional planning timeline for the Waitaki Zone.
The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waitaki, Waimate and Mackenzie District councils. Zone committee meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
