BERL stats show Dunedin Economy growing
Dunedin (17 July 2015) - Figures released this week from Business and Economic Research Limited’s (BERL) 2014 report show that Dunedin’s economy and employment grew in the year to March 2014 with tourism and the creative sector showing positive increases.
Dunedin’s economy (GDP) grew by 2.2% in the year to March 2014, which is a higher rate of growth than over the past decade. Director Enterprise Dunedin John Christie says this is a major improvement as Dunedin’s GDP has seen minimal growth over the previous 10 years.
According to BERL, there were an additional 1,221 full time equivalent jobs in the year to March 2014, compared to a year earlier. This equates to a growth rate of 2.4% over that year.
The tourism sector saw strong growth over the decade, with jobs growing by 9.3% per annum and GDP growing by 3.6% per annum. The creative sector saw growth in 2014, with jobs growing by 8% and GDP by 5.8%.
