Horizons staff take Regional Rivers’ Day to Wanganui

Horizons Regional Council staff will spend a morning clearing silt and replanting natives in the Kowhai Park area in Wanganui to celebrate Regional Rivers’ Day on Thursday 20 August.

The day embodies the values of World Rivers’ Day in September, which aims to highlight the value of rivers, increase public awareness and encourage stewardship of rivers around the world. Horizons chief executive Michael McCartney says this year Horizons has decided to undertake activities on a date that better suited the Region and community.

“Last year we celebrated World Rivers’ Day at a number of sites around the Region on the universal date of 29 September,” says Mr McCartney.

“Following the June flood event, we wanted to do something genuinely meaningful for our community. With many still heavily affected by the aftermath, and a desire amongst staff to do what we can to help, we decided to hold a Regional Rivers’ Day on a date that works in with our planting calendar.”

Horizons staff will pick up rubbish washed up by the floods in the Kowhai Park area, clear silt from around plants and trees in the area and replant natives.
