Relief for Police families following capture

Relief for Police families following capture

Thursday 20 August 2015

"It is not only the police officers involved in the operation to capture Dolphy Kohu who are relieved, but also the families of those officers," Police Association President Greg O'Connor said today.

Mr O'Connor was commenting on the police operation in the Mt Ruapehu area searching for Kohu, who fired at police officers on Wednesday morning.

"During such incidents, all local police resources are mobilised and focused, and families of the officers at home are left more concerned than usual for the safety of their operational partners and parents. The relief that Kohu and his associates have been captured is felt across the whole community."

Mr O'Connor praised the work of all those involved in the hunt. “It shows how professional and competent police are when faced with the most difficult scenario in policing – a mobile, armed, and motivated offender.”

Mr O’Connor said, “The Police Association will be supporting all those involved in the police operation, especially the officers who were fired on.”

“Incidents like this are a reminder to New Zealanders of how everyday policing events, like the decision to pull over a vehicle, can very quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation, like that which unfolded yesterday.”
