Havelock North water supply - Chlorine treatment stopped
PRESS RELEASE: Chlorine treatment stopped
No further chlorine is being added to the Havelock North water supply from today, after tests for contamination came back clear.
Council said it could take a couple of days for the taste of the chlorine to completely disappear.
The clear results today were the third in a row which, under drinking water regulations, allowed chlorine treatment to stop.
Very low levels of e-coli contamination were discovered in the drinking water supply last week.
Chlorine treatment was started immediately.
Initial investigations threw suspicion on one bore and it was unhooked from the system.
Council believed it was possible the heavy rain of the previous few days had led to the bore being contaminated by stormwater.
Investigations are on-going and the bore will not be reinstated into the system until council and the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board are convinced the bore is secure.
