Repair work to begin on Lyttelton Wastewater Treatment Plant
Earthquake repair work will begin on the Lyttelton Wastewater Treatment Plant on 27 October 2015 following Labour Weekend.
The plant suffered structural damage to the basin during the Canterbury earthquakes which has caused a build-up of grit and sand and a loss of capacity.
The plant will be taken out of service for the duration of the repair work, which is anticipated take two weeks to complete.
Wastewater will continue to receive full primary
treatment on site by temporary tanks, followed by the usual
ultra-violet disinfection process before being discharged
through an outfall pipeline into Lyttelton Harbour. The
primary sedimentation sludge will be removed and transported
to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant for
processing.
Located below Sumner Road between the
container terminal and the coal stockpile yards of the
Lyttelton Port Company, the plant treats wastewater from the
Lyttelton, Rapaki, Corsair Bay and Cass Bay communities.
The Lyttelton Wastewater Plant is expected to remain operational until 2021. It will continue to be an integral part of the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater scheme which aims to halt the discharge of treated wastewater from the harbour by pumping it to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant by 2022.
