Enthusiasm high for new Walter Nash Centre
The community has continued to flock to the new Walter Nash Centre in Taita following the excitement of the opening last Friday (16 October). Around 10,000 people visited over the weekend and around 1000 school students on Monday, the first day of operation.
The $12million Walter Nash Centre features five multi-purpose indoor courts, a library, fitness centre, meeting spaces and a café.
Mayor Ray Wallace says he’s been delighted by the community’s response to the new Centre over the weekend.
“This Centre will help the Taita community to thrive. I know people appreciate it, and when I talked to people during my stint as chef on the councillor’s weekend sausage sizzle I could tell that they’re already enjoying everything it offers.”
Centre Manager Lesley Slieker says she was thrilled to see the way the community responded to the opening.
“Families with kids made great use of the sports activities and the special events like the xBox Sport eXpo.
“People who attended the opening realised what a great cultural space it is for entertainers, and that’s something we’re keen to encourage. There’s a lot of interest in the fitness centre and people are enjoying the café.”
