Top Energy: “Look up, look out this summer"

Far North power company Top Energy is urging people to keep an eye on local power lines and report any branches, bark or other items caught in them. Not only can these damage equipment and kill people but they also pose a significant fire risk, particularly when vegetation is dry.

Anybody who spots anything caught in the lines should call Top Energy’s helpline on 0800 867363.

“We’ve spent a lot of time and money over the past few years clearing vegetation from our lines,” said Top Energy operations manager Tony Smallman. “But, with over 4,000 kilometres of power lines across the Far North, and more being built each month, it’s always possible that something is going to get caught in lines somewhere, and that’s where we need the public’s help.”

It’s not just vegetation; things like shoes, ropes, and kites caught up in power lines are potentially dangerous too.

Smallman said people should also report flashes or flames on power lines to Top Energy immediately.

“Anyone spotting any of these hazards should stay clear, safely take whatever action is needed to keep others clear, and call our helpline immediately.”

He also reminded people to let Top Energy know if they accidentally damage electricity poles, lines or cables.

“Our message in these cases is the same: stay clear, safely keep others clear and call our helpline immediately,” he said.
