Rotorua cycle trail and walking tracks re-open after fires

Rotorua’s Te Ara Ahi Cycle Trail and adjacent walking tracks have reopened to the public today.

An area of land between Sulphur Bay and Te Ngae Road had been closed as a safety precaution following Sunday’s (8 November) scrub and sulphur fires in the area.

Rural Fire and New Zealand Fire Service crews have been onsite mopping up and monitoring conditions since the weekend’s big scrub blaze and sulphur deposit fires broke out.

Rotorua Lakes Council is reporting that the last ‘hot spots’ are now under control and people can again use the Te Ara Ahi Cycle Trail and walking tracks.

However the council is warning people to keep to the defined tracks and not ride or wander off into other areas on the sulphur flats where the risk of unstable ground remains.
