Experienced Horizons engineer recognised
Horizons Regional Council engineer Peter Blackwood is the 2015 recipient of the prestigious Arch Campbell Award for his contribution to river management.
The Arch Campbell Award was granted by the Rivers Group of the Institute of Professional Engineers NZ (IPENZ) for Mr Blackwood’s “notable contribution over a number of years to the advancement of knowledge or practice in the field of river management".
The award was presented to Mr Blackwood last week at a ceremony held in Martinborough by Derek Wilshere, a nationally recognised water and soil engineer.
“To qualify for this award the recipient had to demonstrate expertise in any of the following fields; catchment hydrology, catchment management or river engineering. Peter Blackwood has carried out exceptional work in all three,” Mr Wilshere said.
Horizons group manager operations, Allan Cook, said Mr Blackwood has earned nationwide respect for his knowledge and contribution in the areas of river management, global warming policy and flood and coastal hazards assessment.
“Mr Blackwood has been design manager at Horizons Regional Council since 2006 and prior to that held a similar position at Bay of Plenty Regional Council. He has designed many challenging river control works in this time.
“He has completed research in the areas of flood frequency analysis and impacts of long term climatic variation, over and above climate change, on flood flows and river erosion. He has also peer reviewed scientific publications on related topics and his expertise is widely utilised within our organisation.”
