Concrete Commitments Needed From Mayoral Hopefuls

Concrete Commitments Needed From Mayoral Hopefuls - Generation Zero

Youth group, Generation Zero, welcomes Mr Goff to the mayoral race and calls on him to address the housing and transportation challenges faced by young people.

Spokesperson, Leroy Beckett, explains; "Transport and housing are the key concerns for young people and we hope to see Mr Goff announce that he will commit to the Congestion Free Network so Aucklanders have adequate transport choices". The Congestion Free Network is a 30 year public transport plan Generation Zero launched back in 2013. The group will be releasing an updated version of the plan next year.

The Essential Transport Budget was a report released by Generation Zero for the 2015-2025 Long Term Plan which outlined specific projects and mechanism for funding Auckland’s future transport needs. Many of the report's recommendations were adopted by Auckland Council in the Long Term Plan. “Mr Goff will find a balanced vision for Auckland laid out in the Essential Transport Budget that we released early this year which saves Aucklander money while also prioritising essential transport projects” explains Mr Beckett.

Mr Beckett; "The other major challenge for young people is a lack of affordable housing. Housing can only be addressed by building new houses around our town centers close to work and study. This requires the continued commitment on the future Mayor to continue the work of the Unitary Plan and advocate for higher density housing close to where young people work and study.”

"We look forward to the Candidate announcing his specific policy commitments to address transport and housing in the future, which will go a long way to reducing Auckland’s carbon pollution and improving public health outcomes.”
