Reach for the Stars
with Dunedin Public Libraries This
Summer
Dunedin (Tuesday, 1 December 2015) – Young space cadets are invited to sign up at Mission Control for this year’s Summer Reading Programme.
Reach for the Stars launches across the city at all Dunedin Public Libraries on Saturday, 12 December to encourage children to have fun reading books over the summer holidays.
Parents and teachers consistently praise the Libraries’ Summer Reading Programme for giving children a good head-start on their reading skills for their return to school. The aim of the 2015/16 programme is to inspire children to keep growing their reading skills, but also to make them realise reading is for pleasure rather than a chore.
“Our mission is to help children discover and maintain the joy of reading,” says Libraries Events Coordinator Kay Mercer.
“For this year’s space-themed programme, we are once again partnering with the University Book Shop and the Otago Museum for some fun-filled activities to accompany the reading challenge – there will be plenty of things to keep children occupied over the long holiday, and away from screens!”
From Saturday, 12 December children can register for the programme with their local Dunedin Public Library, and receive a Summer Reading booklet, brimming with ideas and activities. Children can set their own reading goals for summer by estimating how many books they will read during the holidays. If they exceed their goal they can increase their target.
Everyone who completes the programme receives a certificate of achievement and a great gift from the University Bookshop, and will go into a draw to win one of five special prizes.
