Enviroschools showcase efforts through expo
Dunedin (Wednesday, 2 December 2015) – Creative ways to care for the environment will be on show at an Enviroschools expo at the Dunedin Botanic Garden on Friday.
Eighteen schools will have stalls at the Garden to display key aspects of what they have achieved as an Enviroschool. Local community groups will also be there to celebrate their connection with those schools.
Enviroschools Regional Co-ordinator Jennie Upton says, “This is a great way to celebrate more than a decade of Enviroschools in Dunedin.
“We will also be unveiling a national ‘We are an Enviroschool’ sign and each school will be presented with their own sign to display at their school.”
The event is being held at the Botanic Garden bandstand and members of the public are welcome to attend from 10am. Invited guests will join the schools and community groups for the sign unveiling and presentation at 11.15am.
Dunedin City Council Community and Environment Committee Chair Cr Jinty MacTavish will unveil the new national signs and Crs David Benson-Pope, Aaron Hawkins and Mike Lord will present the signs to the schools.
Cr MacTavish, who is a former Enviroschools Assistant Regional Co-ordinator, says the event marks a significant milestone for the programme.
“Looking back at over a decade of positive social and environmental action in our schools, our Enviroschools are leaving a very inspiring legacy. The expo will celebrate this, and will no doubt provide lots of inspiration for the next 10 years.
“We encourage people to come along and find out more about the great work these schools are doing.”
The aim of the national programme Enviroschools is to create a generation that instinctively thinks and acts sustainably. The Dunedin Enviroschools programme is funded by the DCC. There are 33 Dunedin Enviroschools and another 34 schools in other parts of Otago.
If it rains, the event will be held in the Dunedin North Intermediate School Hall.
