DCC to seek prosecution for dog attack
DCC to seek prosecution for dog attack
Dunedin (Wednesday, 2 December 2015) – The Dunedin City Council will be taking a prosecution against the owner of the Irish Wolf Hounds that attacked a woman in Dunedin yesterday.
DCC Animal Control Officers have received officers’ notes taken at the time of the incident from the Police which confirm there is evidence to support the council seeking the destruction of the dog.
As a result DCC Animal Service officers met with the owner and the dog was signed over to the DCC and destroyed earlier this afternoon.
The owner took responsibility for having the third dog euthanised privately by a vet, but was given the option of having the dog euthanised by the DCC.
Prior to the meeting the dog was being held in the pound.
While the situation is distressing for all involved, the DCC is responsible for the safety of its residents and enforcing dog control laws and is taking action appropriate to the seriousness of this issue.
People can report aggressive dog behaviour, or attacks, to the DCC at any time. That allows officers to respond to any community concerns.
The Dog Control Act 1996 prescribes two offences, we will be evaluating the case to determine whether the charges are laid under one or both.
As we are now formally seeking a prosecution, it is inappropriate for us to make further comment at this time.
