Judge slammed for releasing murder accused on bail
JUDGE SLAMMED FOR RELEASING MURDER ACCUSED ON BAIL!
Sensible Sentencing Trust’s Manawatu Spokesperson Scott Guthrie has today lashed out at Justice Rachel Dunningham’s decision to release murder accused James Stedman Roberts on bail as callous & totally out of touch with reality.
Roberts, who stands accused of murdering his 5 year old autistic step son Leon Michael LeFleming Jayet Cole, appeared in the Christchurch High Court on Wednesday where he was bailed on a 24 hour curfew along with electronic monitoring.
In May Leon received multiple serious head injuries when he went home from school for his lunch. He died from his injuries 2 days later.
Scott asks “Just what part of Section 9 A (3) of the Bail Act 2000, Restrictions on bail for murder, do these judges not understand?” It clearly states no defendant to whom this section applies may be granted bail or allowed to go at large unless the defendant satisfies the judge that bail should be granted! How can the community be guaranteed safety when we are letting these low life psycho’s back into society. Roberts might be on a 24 hour curfew with electronic monitoring but as we have all too often seen this year a pair of scissors will soon fix that.
All we law abiding citizens of New Zealand are asking is that the judges of our courts, who are the gate keepers of society, start using the law as it is available to them & stop leaving the community at large vulnerable & speechless with such radical & out of touch decisions.
