Library Fines Amnesty now on

Book borrowers with fines owing can receive some early Christmas cheer with the return of a special initiative to local libraries.

All local libraries are holding an amnesty where borrowers can have $5 in overdue fines wiped in return for a can of food for charity.

QLDC Library Services Manager, Jo McElroy said the initiative has been very popular in previous years and is expecting a similar response this year.

“It’s the libraries good deed for Christmas. People get a gift from us in the form of waived fines and local charities benefit. It’s a win-win situation,” she said.

“While any donation of food is hugely appreciated, we do ask that people consider giving the likes of canned fish, meats, pasta sauces or soups to help fill the pantries of those in need.”

The amnesty runs until Wednesday 16 December 2015.

The charities to benefit from the amnesty are individual to each area. Donations received in Queenstown and Arrowtown will be given to Happiness House, while the Upper Clutha libraries will be donating to Wanaka Community Networks.
