Council welcomes additional social housing
Auckland Council today welcomed the government’s
announcement of an additional 500 new social housing places
in Auckland.
The new housing will be delivered by community providers to meet the very real demand for more social housing in New Zealand’s biggest city.
“There’s a huge waiting list,” says Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse.
“More than 2100 applications for social housing in this city have been made - just under half the country’s total. It’s a unacceptable situation and the government’s commitment will go a long way to addressing people’s needs.”
Ms Hulse added the council was looking forward to the Salvation Army’s new project in Royal Oak as well as additional accommodation from social housing providers Accessible Properties and the Chinese New Settler Trust as well as another two providers yet to be announced.
“Auckland needs this initiative and it will help a good many Auckland families in need.”
