Summer thunderstorms but cool temperatures

A cool, southerly flow will bring showers to most of the country over the next few days. These showers are likely to turn thundery in certain places during the afternoon as daytime heating gives them an extra little kick.
Showers are on the cards for many regions, and with an area of low pressure developing to the east of the North Island, even dried-out spots in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay can expect to get wet.
"Thunderstorm activity is forecast to get going this afternoon due to some extra energy provided by daytime heating," said meteorologist Emma Blades. "The best picks for thunderstorms today are the northeast, Canterbury High Country and Marlborough, where hail and heavy showers are expected," commented Ms Blades.
In addition, a narrow band of heavy showers is moving up the west of the country today and is forecast to pass over Auckland this afternoon. "This band brought 5mm of rain in an hour to New Plymouth this morning as it passed over, so we expect something similar as it moves over Auckland, but fortunately it will be brief," Ms Blades added.
Thursday will also be an active day, with a high risk of thunderstorms in central parts of the North Island. Hail and heavy showers are likely in Taupo, Taumaranui and Taihape. Friday is another showery day in the North Island, but will be mostly sunny in the south as high pressure starts to build there.
