Council awards contracts for cycleways work

Christchurch City Council has awarded professional services contracts for the design and construction management of its Major Cycle Routes.

The decision means two consultant groups will do the detailed design work and manage construction of the routes on behalf of the Council. The contracts are split as follows:

Peloton (a group comprising staff from Beca, GHD and MWH) will be responsible for the Papanui Parallel and Quarryman's Trail cycleways as well as the section of Little River Link through Addington as their first tasks.

A team from Opus and Aurecon, named Velos, will deliver the Uni-Cycle and Rapanui — Shag Rock Cycleway as their first tasks.

"This is a sensible response that allows us to meet the community's desire to build the cycleways quickly," says Phil Clearwater, Chair of the Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee.

"Developing and building these routes requires substantial specialist and dedicated resource, especially the work planned over the next three years which has funding assistance from the government. Awarding the contracts means we can have confidence we will have the professional expertise on tap to deliver what is a very challenging programme of work."

Mr Clearwater says the companies will adhere to already approved design guides and procedures. The Council will retain oversight with decisions on Major Cycle Routes work still coming to the Committee for approval.
