Waikouaiti, Karitane residents asked to conserve water

Dunedin (Wednesday, 6 January 2016) – Now that summer is well underway, demand on Dunedin City Council water supplies has started to increase.

DCC Group Manager Water and Waste Dr Laura McElhone says while the available supply is meeting demand in most areas, residents in the Waikouaiti and Karitane area are being asked to conserve water.

“Water demand has risen to the point in the Waikouaiti-Karitane area that we are struggling to maintain adequate storage in the reservoir for fire-fighting purposes.

“To help us maintain a reliable service, and be able to protect you and your property in the event of a fire, it would be appreciated if people in that area could voluntarily reduce their water use.”

Otago Rural Fire Authority Principal Rural Fire Officer Dr Stephanie Rotarangi says, “Fire risk is increasing by the day and there is little relief in the long-range forecast.

“At the risk of stating the obvious, we need quick access to water to fight fires.”

Both the New Zealand Fire Service and Otago Rural Fire Authority crews are also conserving water when training.

“We need to keep water for essential services,” says Assistant Area Manager East Otago Fire District Craig Geddes.

Dr McElhone also reminded people in other areas of the city to be careful with outdoor water use and to take steps to limit water use.
