Sunday fishing banned on New Brighton Pier

Sunday fishing banned on New Brighton Pier

Sunday fishing off New Brighton Pier has been banned for a year from this Sunday, 7 February.

The trial means no-one can fish or use crab pots from 10am to 5pm on Sundays, with the Council reviewing it within the year.

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board decided on the trial at its 7 December meeting last year. The decision came as a result of long-standing community concern about fishing, and other people's use of the Pier.

New signs have been put up on the Pier and around the area to let the public know that the ban is now in force. The Council has also hired 'pier hosts' who can answer questions and ensure that no-one tries to fish between 10am and 5pm. They will have backup support if needed.

The Community Board also decided to ask for funding through the Council's 2017 Annual Plan to look into building a separate fishing platform off the end of the Pier.
