OTOP Zone Committee to consider drinking water quality

OTOP Zone Committee to consider drinking water quality issues

The Orari–Temuka-Opihi–Pareora Zone Committee will hear about key issues facing the supply and quality of drinking water in the OTOP Zone at their meeting on March 7.

Timaru District Council Water Services Operations Engineer Judy Blackmore will present the committee with key issues and considerations they should make as they begin work towards a localised water management project.

The zone committee through the OTOP Local Water Management Project will develop localised solutions to water issues in the zone which will ultimately lead to a plan change, setting water quality and quantity limits and a work programme in Environment Canterbury’s Land & Water Management Regional Plan.

Timaru District Council’s presentation to the zone committee will specifically discuss drinking water supply issues within the Timaru District. They will learn about the 12 water schemes, and issues surrounding competing demands for water, drinking water quality standards and community expectations for water.

The zone committee will also begin discussing options for community engagement about the OTOP Local Water Management Project. The success of the project falls on gaining local knowledge and expertise and understanding community issues and aspirations for water management within the OTOP zone. The zone committee wants to ensure as many people as possible are engaged with the project.

The zone committee will also elect a chair, deputy and regional committee representative for 2016.
