Great day to walk to work
Great day to walk to work
Walk to Work Day will be marked tomorrow with ‘pit stops’ around the city centre as more people are choosing active modes of transport for their commute. The AT-run ‘pit stops’ will be a chance for people walking to work or study to get a mystery prize while having a chat with fellow walkers. Part of Walk Month, Walk to Work Day is an opportunity to promote the benefits of walking your daily commute says AT Cycling and Walking manager Kathryn King.
“More people than ever are choosing public transport, walking and cycling to get to work or study,” she says.
Last year, for the first time in decades, more people walked, cycled or took public transport into the city centre (53%) than travelled in by a private vehicle (47%).
“Walking to work is an enjoyable way to start the day. It provides people with certainty of travel time, cost savings, exercise and it’s an excellent way to enjoy this great weather we’ve been having.”
“Seven percent of Auckland’s adult population (80,939) make a regular trip where they could walk, but don’t,” says Kathryn King. “If even a small number of those trips were taken by foot, we would dramatically decrease the number of cars on the road during peak time.”
“We want people to think about alternatives to driving into the city centre as the CRL and other major works begin.”
Auckland Transport is running Walk2Work pit stops tomorrow morning in the city centre and at selected bus stations. Look out for Auckland Transport ambassadors in T-shirts with The Hits FM street team: They might have a surprise reward for you!
