Thousands walk2work across Auckland
This morning’s wet weather didn’t seem to deter thousands of Aucklanders intent on walking to work today – Walk2Work Day within Walk Month March.
Auckland Transport staff set up six ‘pit stops’ around the city centre and at a selection of public transport links to encourage and thank commuters for leaving their cars at home. Some were handed flowers to brighten their day while others were rewarded with sunscreen and drink bottles to support their walking habit.
“It was great to see so many people walking to work this morning,” says AT Cycling and Walking manager Kathryn King. “There was a steady stream of people visiting our walking pit stops and we engaged with about 1500 walkers throughout the morning. The Victoria Park pit stop was especially busy with folks turning out to join The Hits radio street team.”
“Walk2Work Day is about promoting walking as a fast and convenient way to get to work and to encouraging commuters who may not be using their feet to give it a go. It’s only one day but we hope a fair chunk of first time walkers realise how easy it is and do it more.”
Walk2Work Day is part of Walk Month March.
