Work starts on New Regent Street building repairs

Work starts on New Regent Street building repairs

Work to repair five dangerous buildings on New Regent Street is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Scaffolding will be installed by about 10am on Thursday 10 March to allow workers access to the buildings to work. It will be wrapped to reduce the spread of dust from the worksites.

"Repairs are able to start after the Council and project management company ENTOS this morning agreed on how to resolve issues raised in the peer review of the original repair proposal," says the Council's Head of Operational Policy and Quality Improvement, Robert Wright.

"The priority is to repair the four buildings on the east side of New Regent Street so the cordon can be removed and the trams resume normal operations as quickly as possible."

The repairs that have been agreed means that once work to make the buildings safe is completed, there will be no need for a cordon across the tram tracks when strengthening work is done later.

"To minimise the impact on the street, most of the work will be done from inside the buildings, which will reduce the disruption and impact on visitors and shops. People working on the repairs will mostly gain access from the back of the buildings, although there will be times that they have to come in by the street front," Mr Wright says.

As well as the scaffolding, the verandas will also be propped up tomorrowmorning to secure them while work is done on a more permanent solution.

Cranes required for the repair work will be stationed at the back of the buildings.

The Council will have oversight through its standard construction monitoring.

Arrangements have been made to allow the tram to operate on its alternative route from New Regent Street to the Arts Centre and back.

It is expected that if the repair goes as planned, and there is no disruption due to weather or other events, the work could be completed in about four weeks.

People can still walk along New Regent Street and the businesses are open. The tram will be running from New Regent Street to the Arts Centre and back, connecting with the Cashel Loop.
