Port Chalmers highway, road repairs at night

11 March 2016 | SOUTHERN REGION

State Highway 88, Port Chalmers highway, road repairs at night from Sunday 13 March

The NZ Transport Agency’s contractors are repairing several sections of State Highway 88, the road between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, starting this Sunday evening, 13 March.

“Contractors will mostly be outside the suburban areas of the route,” said Transport Agency Journey Manager Graeme Hall. “They will start on Sunday night and work through to Friday morning, 18 March, from 6.00pm to 6.00am each evening and early morning.

“Nearly all the repairs are outside the route’s settlements except for one area just on the entrance to Port Chalmers at the 50kph threshold signs. These are a reasonable distance from houses so should not generate noise issues.”

As well as the night work, which creates some noise, the road patches will be chip sealed during the day time hours, a quieter operation.

A cruise ship is due to disembark Thursday so contractors will keep the road open and clear that day.

To maintain access, there will be temporary traffic signals at night and manual Stop/ Go during the day.

“Port Otago has been kept aware of the need to do the road repairs,” said Mr Hall. “Thanks to everyone who uses this road for taking care around crews and building in extra time, particularly overnight next week.”
