Safety Risk on Crawford Road Traffic Detour
Vehicles travelling the wrong way through a traffic detour on Crawford Road are putting workers and commuters at risk.
There is a road closure on Crawford Road to all traffic travelling from Hirini Street and Kaiti beach Road past the truckstop. A single lane is open only for traffic heading towards the port to avoid congestion at the intersection near the truckstop.
The road is closed because Council is continuing ongoing maintenance and wastewater pipe renewals in the district with work underway along Crawford Road.
Since work has begun, some vehicles are still using the one way access from the wrong direction, placing contractors and other drivers at risk.
Council encourages people to use the deLatour Road end of Crawford Road or London Street for access to the affected streets.
Water Utilities Manager, Neville West says “We’ve placed a lot of signage warning people of road closure, but the message isn’t getting through. We don’t want anybody getting hurt.”
Expressing his concern about the issue Mr West continues, “I am surprised we haven’t had two cars nose to nose along the open section of road”
Wastewaster pipe replacements and renewals are part of Council’s plan to help reduce the problem of wastewater overflow in parts of the city.
“The sewers in Crawford Road are over 100 years old, and have reached the end of their useful life.
“Older pipes and manholes are leaky, and are very often below ground water levels.”
Current work along Crawford Road is due to finish in April, with work to start in Barton Street following that.
All work areas have a 30km restriction in place.
