Safety barrier installation work to start on SH58

The last phase of the initial curve realignment work on SH58 is about to get underway, with safety barriers to be installed from Monday 4 April.

The work will take place along an 800 metre stretch to the west of Mt Cecil Road. W-style barriers will be installed at the roadside, and a wire rope barrier along the centreline, to further improve safety along this stretch of road.

“Both research and experience has shown these barriers dramatically reduce the severity of crashes where they are installed,” Mark Owen, NZ Transport Agency Regional performance manager says.

“The majority of the work to install the barriers will be off-peak, from 9am-3pm, and will involve speed restrictions and lane closures. While there will be some disruptions to normal journeys through the area, we expect these to be minor.”

“Through the Traffic Operations Centre, we will be monitoring the site via cameras to ensure there is no significant build-up of traffic. If there is, we can react quickly to move the crews off the road and let the traffic pass,” Mr Owen says.
