Find out more about planned safety improvements on SH3

12 April 2016 Y

Community Open Day: Find out more about planned safety improvements on SH3 between Ohaupo and Te Awamutu

People will have the opportunity to find out more about planned safety improvements on State Highway 3 (SH3) between Ohaupo and Te Awamutu at an information session this month.

Representatives from the Transport Agency project team will be at the Te Rahu Hall, Te Rahu Road, Te Awamutu on Tuesday April 19 between 3pm and 7pm.

Members of the public can attend any time during these hours.

Plans to improve safety on the route and changes that have been made following community feedback received at the first information session in February will be discussed.

SH3 between Ohaupo and Te Awamutu is considered a high-risk rural road with eight deaths and 16 serious injuries occurring on the road in the last 10 years.

The safety changes aim to reduce the risk of head-on and run-off-road crashes on the busy commuter route by installing sections of wire rope barrier, widened centreline and improved road markings.

Transport Agency spokesman Andrew Scott says the feedback from the public on the proposed designs for the project has been invaluable.

“It’s the locals who know the area best. Their insights and feedback will help us deliver a project that balances the needs of the residents and traveling public,” he says.

“More than 150 people attended the last information day and we’ve made a number of key changes in response to their feedback including moving side barriers further from the edge of the lane to provide more room for vehicles and cyclists.”

Feedback received during the open days will be used to help refine the project design ahead of construction later this year.
