A much loved
community icon, Wellington Zoo turns 110 years old this
week.
“Wellington Zoo was New Zealand’s first zoo when it was established on 21 April 1906,” says Karen Fifield, Chief Executive. “And Wellington Zoo is also New Zealand’s newest zoo, as the physical space and experience has been completely redeveloped over the last ten years.”
“We want to say thank you to the Wellington community for their ongoing support by giving free entry to the 110th visitor coming through our front doors every day for the next year.”
But the Zoo’s birthday won’t stop there, with big celebrations planned for the summer holidays later this year.
“We want our community to join us to celebrate their Zoo as it is today,” says Karen. “Wellington Zoo is leading the way in helping visitors build emotional connections with animals and helping people understand the roles we can all play to care for environment we share. Our focus is about working together to save animals in the wild.”
For one lucky pair, the 110th birthday celebrations will mean a day discovering more than 110 reasons to love Wellington Zoo – with a unique auction available on Trade Me.
“From 30 minutes getting to know our Cheetahs to a special behind-the-scenes tour for two, we’re shaping up a day to discover every fascinating aspect of the Zoo,” says Karen.
“We are always
looking to the future and how we can secure a future for
wildlife,” says Karen. “Wellington Zoo is at the
forefront of best practice animal care, sustainability and
conservation, and we will continue to do so over the next
110 years.”
