Cool start to the week followed by ridge of high pressure
The front that affected the country over the weekend has now moved north, leaving behind it a cool southwesterly flow. Coastal areas in the far south saw severe gales with gusts of 120 km/h yesterday.
“It’s going to be sunny for much of the country this ANZAC Day,” said MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin. “However, a few showers will affect western areas of both Islands and the far south. A Severe Weather Watch is also in force for coastal parts of Southland, Dunedin and Clutha with westerly winds possibly reaching severe gale in exposed places with 100 km/h gusts this afternoon and evening,” he added.
Tomorrow a ridge
of high pressure spreads over the country from the Tasman,
weakening the southwest flow. By Wednesday the ridge is
well established over the country, and persists into
Thursday bringing fine, settled weather for most places. On
Friday a front spreads rain over the far south, but its
progress north is stunted by the
ridge.
